Any comic book, The Great Brain and The Hobbit.

Many and varied. The most adventurous was either gunfighter or bagel.

What are your hobbies?

Writing, acting, reading, and I still plan to someday build a super-computer from scratch.

I am in love with the Amulet graphic novel series by Kazu Kibuishi.

ANYTHING by Madeline L’Engle, especially An Acceptable Time.  Also Favorite Greek Myths by Mary Pope Osborne; this was before Percy Jackson, so basically, “I liked Greek myths before they were cool”.  What a book hipster.

What’s your favorite book now?

Almost anything by Ray Bradbury, especially A Graveyard for Lunatics and Now and Forever; most recently I’ve been obsessing over Maureen Johnson’s The Name of the Star and Sarah J. Maas’ Throne of Glass.

Why do you like working in a library?

Because I get to work with books, craft supplies, and puppets all day, and I get to help kids discover a love for reading.  Basically, I get to play with cool stuff and change kids’ lives – AND THEY PAY ME FOR IT.

What other jobs have you had? Which was the most adventurous?

I’ve had lots of jobs, but the most adventurous?  On the record, au-pair to a Spanish-German family while living in Germany.  Off the record, barista/assassin in Morocco.

Teleportation – SO useful.  But I already have a superpower:  super-sleeper.  Man, I am really good at sleeping.

Donna V.

What was your favorite book as a child?

The first book that I remember reading as a child was Harriet the Spy.  We did not have a school library when I was in elementary school but I remember quite vividly the excitement of the bookmobile making stops every couple of weeks down the street from my house!

What is your favorite book now?

While I am not normally a science fiction fan I am really enjoying Suzanne Collins’ Hunger Games Trilogy.  For the most part I am mostly a historical fiction, Jane-Austen-Pride-and-Prejudice kind of reader.

What are some of the other jobs you’ve had?

Let’s see.  I have worked as a reporter for a small neighborhood newspaper.  I delivered mail but found it disconcerting when I started talking to mailboxes.  I have been a forestry technician even though I am deathly afraid of snakes.  I have been a 7th and 8th grade English teacher and a few years ago I worked on a bookmobile in my hometown of Charleston, SC.

Why do you like working in a library?

I love to read and I love working in a place where I am surrounded by books.  And, as a bonus, I get to work with people who pretty much feel the same way.  Then there is always the opportunity to share my enthusiasm for books with others and hopefully help them find the information they need.

If you had a superpower what would it be?

I would like to not need to sleep!  I love nothing more than to stay up all night with a really good book.  Unfortunately you cannot do that too often and function properly the next day.  I am such a LIBRARIAN!

What are some of your hobbies?

Reading, of course!  In addition to that I also enjoy baking, bicycling, road trips in the car, and yes, yard work . . . except when the temperatures are 100° and there are no trees in sight.  I hope one day to learn calligraphy and crocheting . . . just not today!

Caps for Sale by Esphyr Slobodkina and then Charlotte’s Web by E. B. White. Oh, and also Time Windows by Kathryn Reiss.  Look it up. :)

Why do you like working in a library?

I like working with and for and around people that love to read as much as I do.  Also, it makes me feel cool.

What other jobs have you had? Which was the most adventurous?

WELL, I’ve worked as a soccer linesman, a “convenience clerk” at a grocery store, a swimming instructor, in retail, and at a five-star steakhouse before starting as a page in the library.  I guess my most adventurous job though would be my internship at the deadCENTER Film Festival in Oklahoma City.  It was tons of fun and I got to watch all kinds of very interesting independent movies.

If you had a superpower what would it be?

Telepathy

Baking, cake decorating, drawing and painting, playing board games, doing crossword and logic puzzles, and of course reading.

Well, let’s just say I am an evangelist for The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver.

Why do you like working in a library?

Because it’s paradise! Where else do you find this perfect combination of a comfortable environment; intelligent, witty coworkers; enthusiastic patrons of all ages; and so many books!

What other jobs have you had? Which was the most adventurous?

I wish I could function without sleep.

What are your hobbies?

Reading, cooking, needlecrafts, and hiking.

What was your favorite book as a kid?

I can’t just name one! I loved any books about dogs, but my absolute favorites were  The Poky Little Puppy, No Roses for Harry and The Diggingest Dog. A little later on, I graduated to Harriet the Spy, which isn’t a dog book, but does involve tomato sandwiches, hiding in dumbwaiters, and rolling around on the floor like an onion!

What’s your favorite book now?

Ack! I still can’t just name one!  To Kill a Mockingbird, Pride and Prejudice (I love Mr. Bennett!), 2001: A Space Odyssey,  A Ring of Endless Light, Crocodile on the Sandbank…those have all been comfort books for a long, long time now. I’m currently pretty obsessed with Patrick O’Brian’s Aubrey-Maturin series though…

I love books, and reading, and working with children, and adventures. It’s kind of a perfect fit!

What other jobs have you had? What is the most adventurous job you’ve had?

I volunteered at a wildlife rehabilitation center for a couple of summers in high school. It was an amazing job! Highlights were holding a vulture, bathing a baby beaver, and feeding the owls. I loved it! I’ve also worked as a preschool teacher, an administrative assistant at a law firm, and a hostess at the Olive Garden. They’ve all been adventurous in their own ways.

If you had a superpower, what would it be?

I would LOVE to have the power of never needing to sleep–there are just so many more interesting things I could be doing with my time!

What are your hobbies?

Reading, photography, travel, dabbling in foreign languages, and daydreaming about exploring Antarctica in the early 1900s!

rebecca

Rebecca G.

What was your favorite book as a kid?

The first book that I can think of that I read many times is The Little Kitten by Judy Dunn. It is a children’s book with photographs of the most adorable kittens, and one of them, Pickles, was always getting into trouble! After that, I read a lot of Nancy Drew, Boxcar Children, and Goosebumps (which gave me nightmares!).

What’s your favorite book now?

Too hard! I will always love Jane Austen. Persuasion, Pride and Prejudice, and Sense and Sensibility are my favorites. I like classics, but lately I have been reading a lot of young adult paranormal, sci-fi, and dystopian books.  Luckily, it’s kind of my job, so it works out well. My favorite of those so far has been Richelle Mead’s Bloodlines series and Maggie Stiefvater’s Scorpio Races.

Why do you like working in a library?

I love working with people who read as much as I do (and more!). I have such a long list of books suggested by coworkers. I definitely never run out of books to read! My favorite part of any day is working at the reference desk and finding the perfect book to fit someone’s needs.

What other jobs have you had? Which was the most adventurous?

I have worked as a birthday party hostess, a restaurant hostess and server at a Mexican restaurant, a McAlister’s and a country club, a summer day camp counselor, a phone center caller (UNT alumni), a nanny, an after school program teacher, a preschool teacher, and a substitute teacher. I’m not sure adventurous would describe any of my former jobs. I have worked in many different environments with children, and if you have any experience at all with those little guys, you will know that every one of those jobs was its own kind of adventure!

If you had a superpower what would it be?

I would choose psychokinesis (which includes telekinesis, levitation, and teleportation) because it sounds awesome.

What are your hobbies?

I feel like it is obvious to say that I read a lot, and I read even more since I began working at the library. I watch a lot of TV. I think I just love stories of all kinds. I also like to cook and play with my ridiculously cute cats.

What was your favorite book as a kid?

I loved the Angelina Ballerina series by Katherine Holabird. On the complete opposite end of the spectrum, I also read anything by Jon Sciezka (Math Curse, The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs, etc.).

Later on, my favorite book became From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler. I was a pretty independent kid and the idea of running away from home and roughing it in a museum appealed to me. I also devoured anything by Roald Dahl. I loved his characters and quirky tales.

What’s your favorite book now?

I’ve gotten really into comic books/graphic novels lately. I was blown away by the Amulet series by Kazu Kibuishi and recommend it to anybody interested in a good adventure story. Another favorite is the breathtaking Jane, the Fox, and Me by Fanny Britt. Finally, Daniel Pinkwater’s The Neddiad: How Neddie Took the Train, Went to Hollywood, and Saved Civilization was simply sublime!

Why do you like working in a library?

The stories!! I’ve recently started listening to audiobooks and I’ve always been a movie person, so when I say stories I don’t mean just books. I’m so much happier when I can be surrounded by good stories and other people who do too. I also like to interact with people and help them out in any way I can.

What other jobs have you had? Which was the most adventurous?

I’ve worked as a vet assistant, sales clerk at a bookstore, a barista, and a reference librarian. My most adventurous would have to be the vet assistant. I had to hold down big dogs while their blood got drawn or they got shots. I’m 5’3” so that was always a feat! There were some interesting pets that stayed with us while their owners were on vacation. Some were lovely and wonderful, but others weren’t so nice. I also got to help on a couple of minimal procedures. Did I mention this was a high school job?

If you had a superpower, what would it be?

Teleportation, or apparition for all those Harry Potter fans out there! It would be just marvelous to travel to Japan or Iceland without dealing with a long flight. Also NO TRAFFIC!

What are your hobbies?

Reading (duh!), going to concerts, taking pictures (not photography…I’m not that fancy), and trying new things!

What was your favorite book as a kid?

I devoured books as a child (still do), so that’s next to impossible to answer. I suppose the ones I went back to most often could be considered my favorites. Where the Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls is a book I went back to so often I had to replace my copy before I reached middle school. Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak was also well-loved in my house.

What’s your favorite book now?

Again, how do I choose? I’ve always enjoyed the Sabriel trilogy by Garth Nix. Since I’m in the middle of the Dexter series by Jeff Lindsay, I’d have to say those as well.

If you had a superpower, what would it be?

An excellent question… I would like to control the weather. Who doesn’t love a good rainstorm while you’re sleeping? Always lulls me off right away. And then I could shoo the clouds away when it was time to start the day.

What are your hobbies?

My hobby is collecting hobbies. I have more of them than I can fit in a walk-in closet. I write, I draw, I make dream catchers, I sew, I make custom teddy bears, I bake, I paint… I could go on, but it’ll fill the page!
