But I Wanted a Little Sister

But I Wanted a Little Sister

By:  Pauline Oud

Patrons always ask me for books for their children about becoming a new big sister or big brother.  I’m pleased that we have another addition to the new sibling collection.  This story is very sweet.  A young girl named Sophie learns to deal with her disappointment over having a new baby brother instead of a new baby sister.  At first, Sophie dresses the baby boy as her Pretend-Sister and plays girly games with him.  He doesn’t seem to mind at all.  However, when her mom gives her baby brother a haircut, he looks like a little boy.  Now Sophie is ready to return her baby brother in exchange for a baby sister.  Many of Sophie’s friends want to give up their baby sisters who cry or break their toys.  This makes Sophie realize how lucky she is to have her sweet little brother.

The illustrations of the characters are filled with expression and should hold the attention of toddlers and preschoolers.
