The Martin family moves from Iowa to Colorado in the early 1900s and endures many hardships while trying to farm the land. The story, told through the eyes of twelve-year-old Belle, is both heartbreaking and uplifting. Belle and her six siblings live with their mother and father in a sod dugout home. The Martins encounter hail, snow, locusts, sickness and death as they try to earn their homestead by farming for five years. Life is not all hardship though. The Martins have the support of friendly neighbors to lighten their load. Belle is especially happy to meet Lizzie, a woman who homesteads alone and frequently helps the Martin family.
