John Ronald’s Dragons – The Story of J.R.R. Tolkien

John Ronald’s Dragons – The Story of J.R.R. Tolkien

By:  Caroline McAlister

Author Caroline McAlister introduces young people to the life of J.R.R. Tolkien in this picture book biography.  John Ronald, as he was known as a boy, dreamed of dragons and other fantastical creatures from storybooks his mother read to him.  This biography jumps from his childhood to his years fighting in the trenches during World War I.  Following the war, John Ronald taught at Oxford University.  Finally readers will learn how he went on to write THE HOBBIT and how he finally found his dragon, Smaug.

This biography would make a great introduction to author prior to reading THE HOBBIT.  The text is beautifully illustrated by Eliza Wheeler (THIS IS OUR BABY, BORN TODAY).  An author’s note includes a catalog of dragons, and a bibliography of further readings about J.R.R. Tolkien.
