Increase your child’s reading fluency by creating an interactive word family sorting station. Children can practice word pattern recognition by sorting through words and placing them in appropriate groups. When children sort words they are engaged in the active process of searching, comparing, contrasting, and analyzing. Word sorts help children organize what they know about words and to form generalizations that they can then apply to new words they encounter while reading. As your child’s reading fluency grows, add more word families to the mix to make the activity more challenging.
