After reading the title of this book, I was immediately intrigued. A pet black hole? How is that even possible? It is 1977 and eleven-year-old Stella Rodriguez is grieving the loss of her father. She visits NASA to try to meet astronomer, Carl Sagan, and a black hole follows her home. Stella names the black hole “Larry” and tries to train it. Larry moves into her house and begins consuming everything in sight including Stinky Stu, the class hamster, the neighbor’s garden gnomes, and the new family puppy. When the puppy goes missing and the black hole consumes a treasured photo of her late father, Stella recruits her younger brother, Cosmo, on a journey into the black hole to retrieve what was lost. The journey into the black hole is depicted in the book as white print on black pages. Author, Cuevas, does not shy away from exploring the sadness surrounding the death of a parent, but the book is also has some extremely funny moments.
