I Got Two Dogs by John Lithgow
Did you know the best way to read a book can be to sing it? I Got Two Dogs has recently become a new favorite for me for this exact reason. Fanny and Blue might sound like your average dogs at first, but by the end of the story you’ll understand why “there’s nothing I’d trade for my Fanny and Blue.” The best part of this book is the accompanying CD with a recording of author (and lyricist!) John Lithgow singing the bouncy, rhyming words. By the end you’ll have a hard time resisting howling along when he sings about how his two dogs are “not too smart, but they’re loyal and true-ooo-ooo-ooo-ooo.”
Most people might know John Lithgow from his acting career – be it as Dr. Solomon in the TV show “3rd Rock from the Sun,” Reverend Moore in Footloose, or as the voice of Lord Farquaad in the Shrek movies. (He’s also done a lot of theater and been nominated for a few awards.) Fewer people know that he is also a talented children’s book author. If you like this one, try his other titles in the Plano Library collection. Most copies include their own CDs of Mr. Lithgow reading, if not singing, his stories.
You can watch a great clip of John Lithgow singing part of this bouncy tune here on You Tube. I dare you not to sing along!
