With Valentine’s Day right around the corner, I thought that I would share some of my favorite love-related easy picture books.
The Pout-Pout Fish by Deborah Diesen
How can you not fall in love with Mr. Fish?! This little blue fish swims around the sea, dispirited. All of his friends try to convince him that his negativity is unbecoming, but the Pout-Pout fish continues with his crestfallen disposition. One begins to think that there is nothing that will make him content, but the new girl in town – full of shimmer and sass – swims down and plants a kiss on Mr. Fish. He becomes a changed fish! I love, love, love this book! I especially love when Mr. Fish “bluuuuubs” throughout the book. It makes it very entertaining when you are overly dramatic with the “bluuuuub” sounds!
Kiss! Kiss! Yuck! Yuck! By Kyle Mewburn
Poor Andy always runs away to hide when his Auntie Elsie arrives, because she just loves to give kisses. What’s worse, when she puckers up for a sugar kiss, she affectionately tacks on sugary adjectives to Andy’s name, such as “Andy Apple Jelly” or “Andy Apple Crumble.” Ahhh! But when Auntie Elsie doesn’t show up for her regular visits, Andy begins to miss those kisses and those nicknames. This is such a great book to read aloud with your preschooler. Photographs and drawings make up the illustrations in this book. Wait till you see Andy’s Dad!! What a hoot!
Hugless Douglas by David Melling
Douglas wakes up in need of a hug, so he goes out to find one. Nothing seems right.A rock is too heavy, a tree gives him splinters, a bush runs away, and he angers an owl. Who will give Douglas a hug? I just love the illustrations in this sweet story. Douglas looks oh so huggable. Have you hugged someone today?
